๐Ÿšฃ Sep-Oct 2025ย ๐Ÿ‚

Hello there paddlers!

So, September is upon us… That means our last evening sessions will be next Tues 9th and Thurs 11th. โš ๏ธ Please bring torches and whistles for paddling in the dark.

Sessions will then be running to our winter schedule:

  • Saturdays & Sundays (09.15 arrival, on the water for 10.00) โ€“ Paddle up to Hurley, or down to The Bounty, and back. Remember water, your own flask and snack, now the tea shop is closed.

Keep an eye on the Facebook page for updates on river conditions and potential cancellations.

โ„๏ธ Tim’s Winter Warmer Words to the Wise

“Thereโ€™s no such thing as bad weather – just the wrong kit!
Even as nights draw in, kayaking continues at MCC, though evening sessions finish next week. In tougher conditions we may have to be selective about who we take out, but rarely turn people away.

The secret to winter paddling is warmth and the right clothing.

Modern gear makes a huge difference. A dry cag with twin waist is ideal, with latex or neoprene seals to keep water out. Add neoprene trousers or, better still, a full drysuit for total protection. Layer thermals underneath – pukka kayaking kit if you like, but Decathlon basics do the job. For feet, think wetsuit boots or wetsuit socks with old trainers. If using a drysuit, add thick socks plus neoprene socks inside boots.

Hands and heads suffer most, so go for neoprene mitts or pogies – never Marigolds! Top off with buoyancy aid, helmet or beanie, and youโ€™re set. Always paddle in threes, check weather, carry hot drinks, snacks, and phone, and leave a plan with someone.

MCC runs winter trips to help you build skills and confidence safely. Join us and learn to enjoy the river, whatever the season. See you out there!” Tim.
